Interesting (and good) sounds

You have some interesting sounds going on here, some that are clearly not akin to trance music and some that are. The bassline is absolutely rockin'. A bit repetitive, even for my taste, especially at the beginning, but as soon as the melodies and chords kicked in, this track started to shine.

The main issues with this track are mostly concerned with its production aspects: your saw lead in the latter half of the track could use 32464326 more layers and more of a presence. While the melody is great, it's not as powerful as it should be. As well, the opening instrument has some piercing highs -- a reasonable cut to these frequencies will respect the listener's ears a little better.

My personal tastes also dictate me to say that this mix could be a bit more balanced, especially with the percussion and the choir, but that's more a matter of taste than an actual technical issue really.

Good track! I hope to hear more from you.

Oakwood responds:

Thanks for the critics, I'll make sure to make sure of them.
You'll here more from me, don't worry. ;)

This is sounding good

The time and effort placed into mastering this mix is clearly paying off. You have a clean and crisp soundscape going on here. I would even go as far as to say too clean. Trance should create a sense of immersion and space. Try some effects like light reverbs and/or echos. Your sounds will propagate that much better.

Or4nges responds:

In all honestly there is reverb. I've got just about every sound in this sound relayed through a master reverb channel. Granted there's not that much, you would definitely be able to tell if I turned it off. It gives everything more thickness, and body.

But.. I was going for crisp in this song. I will play around with reverb levels, but I am enjoying the clarity :)

Not bad...

Pretty good melodies you got going here. Lovin' that clean lead at 2:37.

Production and mastering could use some work. Spend more time with your synths to get more sophisticated sounds. Your lead is great, but everything else is kind of meh. Some variation of the percussion wouldn't hurt either.

Looking forward to hearing more from you.

Omnivore responds:

Thanks! I need to find a good out-put for mastering Trance/Techno style music with Ozone4, more experimenting with the program should help..

Pretty good!

The main melody is lovely, and the atmosphere you paint with your synths is great. Akin to a modern trance track should be a much punchier and in-your-face kick drum, especially for a minimalist track like this. Some variation on the kick, especially between phrases and breakdowns wouldn't hurt either.

Your long buildup starting at about 2:50 could use some work, production-wise: The build up arp clashes too much with your ducking background pads, disrespecting the overall mix's sense of sound space. A filter to the pad or cutting back on the reverb/echo on the arp (as well as some good EQ'ing and peak-level compression) would do the trick.

Despite these nit-pickings, this is a very good track, and I hope these production/mastering tips will help you in the future.

BuggMusic responds:

Absolutely agree with you on most of these points. I made this track a while ago and it had been sitting in my WIP folder for ages. I pretty much didn't even feel like I had made it, so I didn't have the time or energy to go through and remaster it and mix it properly. Make sure to check out some of my other songs! Thanks!

Not bad.

It's clear you have a knack for writing melodies and chords, but your production and mastering skills are lacking. It's one thing to compose something, it's another thing to produce it. You want to make your mix sound clean, fresh, and high fidelity. Play with your synthesizers more to get that high quality, sophisticated sound, or look for better ones out there.

Ibinaldo2 responds:

hmm, you have a point, tweaking the software and sounds is something I haven't really learnt much about. So far, iv been more preoccupied with the melodies. So what do you suggest I do here? Thanks for the review once again

Good melody and production.

Your bassline definitely has a Robert Miles feel to it, and the gated lead is wonderful. I recommend, for your future productions, to have more variation on your percussion.

SASKID responds:

Gated pad*

And thanks :) i'll bear that in mind.

Good!

The saw pad in the beginning could use more layers and better EQ'ing.

DjYeoh responds:

Will do! thank you for the honest opinion!
